By Paul Yeager, author of Weather Whys: Facts, Myths, and Oddities

NOAA has yet to issue its official winter forecast–that will come along in October–but the return of La Nina to talk with confidence about some possibilities for the upcoming 2011-2012 season.

It’s not good news for the drought-stricken southern Plains, where widespread exceptional drought conditions prevail, since a La Nina typically means a fewer-than-average number of storms in this part of the United States. Other possible effects of a La Nina include wetter-than-average conditions in the Pacific Northwest and warmer-than-average temperatures in the Southeast.

For more information on NOAA’s initial forecast, read my Huffington Post blog La Nina Is Back: Another Wild Winter on the Way?

I’ll write a post on the official forecast after it’s been released.
